The success of Canada & rsquo;s natural resource sector has increasingly relied on close, and often complex, relationships between key groups. These include Indigenous communities affected by resource development, as well as industry and government. While these groups understand the importance of working closely together, a continuing challenge is the meaningful engagement of Indigenous youth.
Many Indigenous youth (those under 35 years old) may soon grow into positions of power and authority in their communities, making it increasingly important for industry and government to lay the foundations of positive, meaningful relationships today. To help strengthen these foundations, The Conference Board of Canada organized and delivered the Our Land, Our Future summit on Indigenous youth and natural resource development. The summit took place in Calgary on November 21 and 22, 2017.
It was the first national summit to bring the perspectives, needs, and aspirations of Indigenous youth to the forefront of Canada’s discourse on natural resource development. This report presents findings from the summit’s plenary and breakout sessions. It summarizes the summit’s main sessions; discusses the main themes, challenges, and opportunities that arose during sessions; and provides recommendations for industry, government, academic institutions, and Indigenous youth and communities.
