Document Highlights

This year’s edition examines the labour relations environment in 2005. This year promises to be not only a big year for bargaining, but also a difficult one. Both management and labour are facing major challenges. The pressures of globalization, a tight labour market, government fiscal restraint, and the divisive issue of pensions and benefits are some of the challenges. Management finds itself zeroing in on productivity and costs containment, while unions are struggling to build membership, obtain more for their workers, particularly in light of government’s offloading of certain health-care costs, and to remain a relevant force in Canadian society. In an effort to address the many challenges they face, management and unions are sometimes finding common ground. Some are recognizing their mutual self-interest in keeping their organization productive and competitive, and are therefore pulling together. In other situations, disagreement and rigidity mark labour relations, and management and unions find themselves poles apart.
