Document Highlights

  • Among the nine Canadian cities monitored for this outlook, Calgary and Edmonton are expected to enjoy the fastest rates of growth in overnights visits, thanks to the strength of Alberta’s economy, robust growth in business travel and the province’s centennial celebrations.
  • Economic strength in Alberta is also helping to boost travel to Vancouver. Moreover, Vancouver tourism will benefit from a strong influx of overseas visitors, particularly from Asian markets, as well as improved business travel. Thus Vancouver is expected to have the third highest growth in overnight visits this year.
  • A successful Carnival in Quebec City and Winterlude in Ottawa helped to get travel to both cities off to a good start this year. A turnaround in convention travel is expected to further shore up growth in overnight travel.
  • Travel to Toronto, Montréal and Halifax continues to grow steadily, despite the strength of the loonie, which is dampening travel from the United States and encouraging Canadian travellers to go overseas.
