Employee engagement is emerging as one of the critical levers companies can use to drive performance, even, and in some cases especially, under adverse market conditions. This report reflects the work of a research working group (RWG) of experienced practitioners who, partnered with human capital researchers, examined the current state of employee engagement practices to discover how companies, even in challenging environments, are finding success. As one aspect of its research, the RWG conducted a survey of senior human capital professionals with direct control over, or insight into, engagement practices and culled responses from 209 members of The Conference Board across 21 countries. The group’s research found the function to be understaffed, underutilized, and often disconnected from an organization’s business strategy.
