This case study on Building Essential Skills in the Workplace highlights Project Duraschool, a highly successful workplace education program that has benefited both workers and Durabelt Inc.
Document Highlights
To be effective in their jobs, Durabelt employees need to be adept not only at using their technical, job-specific skills; but must also be able to manage their time, sequence operations, work in and support teams, work safely and deal effectively with external customers who purchase belted chains and bring in old ones for repair. When skill deficiencies on the shop floor started to affect productivity—several employees were experiencing trouble reading and understanding work orders, doing the required calculations and solving day-to-day production problems—Durabelt approached Workplace Education–PEI for help in developing an in-house program. Duraschool was the result.
The aim of Duraschool is manifold: to help employees with literacy, numeracy and problem-solving challenges; raise employees’ self-confidence by giving them the tools to work through problems in the workplace; encourage employees to take pride in their work; and close a skills gap.
This case study explores the elements of the program, the challenges, keys to success, and impacts and benefits.
