Beyond Benefits: Disability Plans and Absence Management in Canadian Workplaces is the third and final report in a series of publications that summarize the results of The Conference Board of Canada’s inaugural 2009 Employer-Sponsored Benefit Programs Survey of 255 medium-sized and large organizations across Canada. The report documents casual absence/sick leave provisions and practices, as well as short- and long-term disability program coverage in Canadian workplaces. It also looks at successful organizational strategies to manage absenteeism. The report finds that Canadian organizations generally do not track employee absenteeism well, even though rates—already high by international standards—are on the rise. The implications for organizations of absenteeism are significant—both in terms of lost wages and productivity, and in the potential to substantially reduce costs through better management of their programs. To this end, the report outlines steps that organizations can take to better manage their programs.
