Today, as we mark the start of National Indigenous History Month, we recognize the cultures, heritage and traditions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples across Canada. This is a month to both deepen our understanding of and celebrate Indigenous communities from coast to coast to coast.
As we look to honour and celebrate with Indigenous people this month, we are reminded yet again of the harsh legacy of the residential school system. All of us are deeply saddened by the recent discovery of the remains of 215 children near the former Kamloops Indian Residential School, located on the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation. We mourn with Indigenous communities, families and residential school survivors across the country.
We are committed to sharing the truth about Indigenous history, cultures and resilience through our research and collaboration with our Indigenous partners.
