Document Highlights

Without change to the structure of Canada’s health system, public health care expenditures will increase from 31 cents of every provincial and territorial tax dollar in 2000 to 42 cents by 2020. This report’s findings underscore the need to engage the public in a discussion about how Canada’s health care system can remain financially sustainable over the longer term.

While other studies have undertaken project analyses of future health care expenditures, and/or in relation to overall economic activity as measured by Gross Domestic Product (GDP), this report has gone the additional step of estimating how future economic growth translates into a public revenue stream for all provinces and territories.
