Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally and, in Canada, accounts for nearly one-third of deaths. Although deaths from cancer in Canada have decreased over the past two decades, many are still avoidable. To do better, we first need to know the full impact of cancer and how we compare with peer countries.
This report examines cancer mortality rates in Canada, with a focus on lung, colorectal, and prostate cancers. It compares the age-standardized mortality rates of Canada and the provinces against 16 peer countries with similar economic and socio-demographic profiles. The comparison highlights top-performing jurisdictions and encourages sharing of best practices. The report is an update of the last How Canada Performs health report.
Cancer has an enormous impact on patients and their families, the health care system, society, and the economy. Any advancement to reduce incidence and mortality rates is invaluable. Mortality due to cancer varies between jurisdictions. The current research shows Canada ranks average and its provinces relatively low and that they should aim for improvement.
