Corporate sustainability initiatives, sometimes perceived as expensive and isolated “nice-to-haves,” can be profit centers, according to our study of trailblazers in the field. Our research finds that a sustainable product portfolio grows the bottom line at an accelerated pace: six times the rate of overall company revenues, according to our sample. Financial involvement in such products is mushrooming, as commercial and investment banks underwrite large-scale solutions through asset finance, tax equity, and green bonds. All this suggests that CFOs should be front and center in sustainability strategy.

Corporate sustainability initiatives deserve the attention of CFOs. In 2010-2013, revenues from sustainable products and services grew at six times the rate of overall revenues in companies we studied.
