About the Scholar-in-Residence

Overview

The CIBC Scholar-in-Residence Research Chair actively engages renowned scholars in The Conference Board of Canada’s advanced research programs, where they will conduct research on issues of national importance that will contribute to improving Canada’s future.

Each Research Chair will be an academic who is at home in a policy and research environment and who possesses an outstanding record of research on public policy, economic or organizational performance issues of national importance to Canadians.

Description

The CIBC Scholar-in-Residence Research Chair is an ongoing program. Since September 2005, the program funds a scholar to take up residence at the Conference Board’s main offices in Ottawa to carry out research relating to one or more of the research themes identified below. The appointed Research Chair will work closely with the Conference Board on a mutually agreed-upon basis throughout the period of tenure (normally spread over a 12 month period).

Research Chair Activities

During the tenure, the Research Chair will:

  • Undertake a research project relating to one or more of the themes identified by the Conference Board as being of strategic importance to Canada (see Section 4, below).
  • Guide, mentor and collaborate with Conference Board researchers.
  • Publish one or more monographs on Canada’s economic/social performance.
  • Give a high-profile lecture highlighting the research findings (e.g., at an established annual conference).
  • Participate in regular in-house seminar/discussion sessions with invited executive, management and research staff.
  • Transfer research insights through dialogue with senior business and government leaders at selected Conference Board events.

Value and Duration

Research Chairs will be appointed for a period of 10-12 months. The length of the tenure will be agreed upon prior to taking up the appointment.

Research Chairs will receive a stipend for the duration of this tenure. This stipend is an all-inclusive payment that is meant to cover salary, travel, relocation, accommodation and other direct costs.

Eligibility

Applications are invited from scholars affiliated with Canadian universities or universities in other countries.

Scholars who would be on sabbatical leave or who are in part-time arrangements during the tenure of the appointment are eligible to apply.

Preference will be given to applicants who combine outstanding research expertise with excellent oral and written communication skills. The ideal candidate will be a full professor, or equivalent, with nationally or internationally recognized subject expertise. He or she will be comfortable dealing with senior executives in business, government and NGO communities, as well as with researchers and academics.
