Beyond Physical Condition Ratings: A New Framework for Resilient and Sustainable Infrastructure

Municipalities across Canada are facing significant challenges to their infrastructure because of resource limitations, impacts from climate change, and the uncertainties associated with them. This webinar will outline the major challenges faced by infrastructure systems, and demonstrate how a Functionality-Survivability-Sustainability (FSS) Framework can comprehensively incorporate physical and other challenges in a single framework. Examples of the application of this framework to assess a stormwater infrastructure system in a medium size city in Ontario will be provided. Opportunities to extend this framework to other forms of infrastructure will also be considered.

Webinar Highlights

In this 60-minute webinar, Dr. Upadhyaha will:

  • Describe the current challenges facing infrastructure in Canada, with respect to its resiliency and sustainability;
  • Outline the dominant approaches to evaluating infrastructure in cities, highlighting why a new approach is required;
  • Present the Functionality-Survivability-Sustainability (FFS) Framework she developed to evaluate storm water infrastructure;
  • Highlight the application of this framework in the Ontario city, along with key findings; and
  • Explore how the FFS framework can be integrated with existing evaluation frameworks for infrastructure and be used to evaluate other assets

About Dr. Upadhyaya

Photo of Dr. Jyoti UpadhyayaDr. Jyoti Upadhyaya’s work in municipal infrastructure expands over 20 years. Jyoti is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Windsor, Windsor, Ontario. Jyoti has developed the Functionality-Survivability-Sustainability Framework (FSS Framework) to assess infrastructures by incorporating functionality, resiliency and sustainability in a single framework. In her current project, funded by the Canadian Water Network, Jyoti is implementing the FSS Framework in a medium size city in Ontario. Jyoti has also developed Sustainability Indicators for wastewater reuse systems and successfully implemented the indicators to evaluate reuse systems while she was in Australia. Prior to Academia, Jyoti worked as civil engineer for several years in planning, design and project management of municipal water infrastructure systems, and program implementation and service delivery in Nepal. Jyoti also teaches water resources related courses at the Brock University. She is an Associate with the Environmental Sustainability Research Centre at Brock, and sits on the Engaging Community Committee. Jyoti also serves on the Ontario Water Works Association and Water Environmental Association of Ontario (OWWA/WEAO)’s joint Climate Change Committee. Jyoti has presented her work in various seminars, conferences, and published in prestigious journal and conference proceedings
