This “fiscal snapshot” looks at the state of Ontario's economy and its government’s fiscal challenges, and provides a short- and medium-term outlook for the province.

Document Highlights

  • The province is relying on strong revenue assumptions combined with tight program spending to balance the books in 2017–18.
  • Due to stronger economic growth relative to the other provinces, there will be a sizeable drop-off in equalization payments beginning in 2017–18.
  • Given our weaker outlook for economic growth and lower transfers from the federal government, balancing the books by the target date of 2017–18 will be a photo finish.
