From Mind to Market: Commercializing Research from Post-Secondary Institutions

In addition to cultivating skills in the next generation of workers, post-secondary institutions are important nodes in the innovation economy, charged with creating new knowledge and ideas that help businesses succeed. Yet the transition from theoretical ‘basic research’ to practical application and commercialization is no easy task. Without a promising environment and a helping hand from external actors, great ideas and research run the risk of never materializing into new products and services, and ultimately being lost.

To traverse this so called ‘innovation valley of death,’ post-secondary institutions engage with industry and government to commercialize and action their research. These partnerships use combined resources and connections to enhance and improve the migration from mind to market. But how do these processes and relationships work? And what are the benefits of these engagements for institutions, business, and Canadians as a whole?

During the 60 minute presentation, Mark Robbins will discuss how post-secondary institutions, industry and government engage with the innovation ecosystem. Learn the keys to successful research commercialization, what works and what doesn’t, and what practices are being adopted by leading institutions across the country. This webinar will specifically explore:

  • the process of developing basic research into commercial ventures
  • the role of post-secondary institutions, government and industry in research commercialization and how they work together
  • the transnational innovation ecosystem and models for partnership
  • the research park as a key node in the innovation ecosystem

About Mark

Photo of Mark RobbinsMark Robbins is a Research Associate in the Industry and Business Strategy group at The Conference Board of Canada. Mark works on a variety of projects with the Centre for Business Innovation, the Centre for Skills and Post-Secondary Education and the Centre for Food in Canada. His current research projects include labour market studies for the agricultural and manufacturing sectors, ‘spotlight studies’ on leading practices in post-secondary education, and a study of business education in Canada.

Before joining to the Conference Board Mark spent four years with the Canadian Public Service, several years in private sector consulting and has spent time at the Parliament of Canada, the United Nations Secretariat in Bangkok and AIESEC in New Delhi. Mark has a Master’s in political economy (Carleton) an honours bachelor in political science (Ottawa), and certificates in business (Mohawk) and urban design (Simon Fraser).

About Michele

Before returning to Canada and working for the Conference Board in Spring of 2015, Michele was a Senior Analyst at RAND Europe where he worked on a variety of client portfolios and topics: determining how the defence sector could better cooperate with civilian researchers, entrepreneurs, and industry; supporting innovative solutions to anti-microbial resistance; and analysing the translational impact of medical research funding.

Before moving to Europe, Michele was a Senior Policy Advisor for the Ministry of Research and Innovation in Ontario, Canada, where he managed research funding programs, and provided policy advice on various issues.

Michele has a PhD in political science from the University of Toronto, and a Bachelor (Honours) in Political Studies and Bachelor in Economics from Queen's University.
