| I'm glad to see that the article addresses Alberta's need for a sales tax instead of relying as heavily as it does on oil revenue. |

There are several different ways that the Alberta Government could generate more revenue, and recent decisions to not implement any new taxes was short sighted. Unfortunatly politics often trump good economic decisions for our province.
This article does a good job at highlighting the revenue generating options available. However, I do think there should be some focus placed on the role of governmnet investment in our economy. |

| This is a very apt paper given the deficit spending being used to make up for loses in natural reource revenues. |

| This provides a highly readable review of Alberta's key fiscal issues together with practical solutions that do not impinge on Alberta's relative advantage in terms of total tax burden. |

Saving for future generations is certainly a necessity and as the article points out was the intent of the Heritage Fund which governments seem to continually ignore. But even this is no panacea, Alberta's economy is driven by non-renewable resources, which will be increasingly competing with other sources of energy. Eventually Alberta will need to diversify its economy or its fate will be sealed like the steel or fishing industries.
Diversification of the economy will take time but it will also create income diversification for the province in the long term. Looking at our eastern friends I don't think higher taxation has been a solution for their economic woes. Perhaps more can be gained by encouraging investment in innovation and future industries. While expecting governments to manage the provinces finances responsibly. |

| The report is a useful and concise survey of the fiscal issues facing the province and provides. Some very sensible policy solutions for the government to consider. Implementing a provincial sales tax is not the only alternative but it would provide significant new revenue without upsetting Alberta's position relative to other jurisdictions. |
