Consumers began the new year feeling more optimistic, with the Index of Consumer Confidence gaining 5.1 points to reach 83 (2002=100) following three straight months of marginal declines. This month’s increase brings the index to its highest point since June 2011.

The monthly Index of Consumer Confidence is constructed from responses to four attitudinal questions posed to a random sample of Canadian households.
