Document Highlights

Canada’s Information Technology and Communications Industry: Industrial Outlook forecasts revenue, costs and profits for the information technology and communications industry by analyzing its three key sectors: computer and electronic production manufacturing, telecommunications services, and computer systems design and related services.

Overall profits are expected to reach almost $4 billion this year, as demand and production continue to recover from the collapse of the industry in the early part of this decade. Although the industry will remain in the black over the next few years, profit margins will be squeezed by declining prices, which hurt revenue growth. By 2008, profits are expected to be $3.8 billion, significantly lower than the more than $5.5 billion in profits recorded in the late 1990s.

The outlook includes a special feature on voice over Internet protocol (VoIP), which will lead to even more intense competition between cable operators, large telecoms and wireless service providers.
