This case study on Building Essential Skills in the Workplace highlights the Workplace Learning Program at Billiton Diamonds Inc., a highly successful workplace education program that has benefited both workers and the company and that continues to expand.
Document Highlights
BHP Billiton developed its Workplace Learning Program as part of its commitment to build a sustainable Aboriginal and northern workforce. The labour force from which the Ekati diamond mine site draws its workers presents several skills-related challenges: a population with a strong oral, rather than written, culture; workers with little or negative experience with schooling and previous formal employment.
The company offers regular classes and structured programs to all workers who wish to upgrade their skills. The objectives are to maintain and improve safety in the planning and execution of all work activities and offer upgrading to learners of all levels (through literacy skills upgrading, pre-trades training and apprenticeship preparation, instruction and support for workers wish to complete high school) and access to correspondence courses.
This case study explores the elements of the program, the resources devoted to it, its innovations, challenges, keys to success, impacts and benefits.
