This report contains a review of and outlook for tourism activity in New Brunswick, assessing the impact on tourism of COVID-19 and the public health restrictions. It examines domestic as well as U.S. and overseas activities.

Document Highlights

  • We expect tourism to New Brunswick, after visits declined by 9.5 per cent in 2021, to begin recovering in 2022 with visits to the province increasing by 35.2 per cent.
  • Domestic trips will rise by 41.5 per cent in 2022 and by 17.9 per cent in 2023, eventually reaching pre-pandemic levels in 2024.
  • Both the province and the Atlantic region should benefit from those who are still nervous to travel abroad but who would like a longer distance trip.
  • U.S. visits to New Brunswick will rebound sharply over the near term, but surging gasoline prices are a downside risk to the outlook.
  • Overnight pleasure trips from the U.S. will not reach 2019 levels right through the medium term.
  • New Brunswick’s new tourism plan, entitled The Invitation, will help increase visits to the province, especially in the winter months. The Canadian Hockey League’s Memorial Cup in 2022 will also provide a boost.
