  • It appears that Canadian job markets have stabilized, with employment losses ebbing considerably from what we saw earlier in the business cycle downturn.
  • Most of the job losses observed since last October were in full-time work (–454,000), while part-time employment slowly edged up by 84,000 positions over the same period.
  • The Canadian economy contracted by 0.1 per cent in April, the result of weakness in the manufacturing and energy sectors.
  • Construction activity also slipped by 0.1 per cent in the same period, lowering the industry’s output by 3.3 per cent relative to April 2008.
