From Shortages to Solutions: Tackling Canada’s Critical Gaps in Healthcare, Trades, and Tech
In this research, we use occupation-level job vacancy data from the Job Vacancy and Wage Survey to measure current excess vacancies by occupation and then link this data to the Occupational and Skills Information System (OaSIS) database to identify skills shortages. We cluster over occupation-level skill requirements to determine occupation clusters with similar skill profiles to capture the broader impacts of skills shortages.
Which occupation clusters have the most excess vacancies, and how much do these vacancies cost the Canadian economy and affect aggregate productivity growth? Which skills are currently in short supply? What proportion of Canada’s missing skilled workers require formal post-secondary education? What can university and college leaders do to address these skill imbalances, and how can the federal government leverage immigration policies to help fill critical skills shortages?
