Document Highlights

This “fiscal snapshot” looks at the state of Saskatchewan’s economy and its government’s fiscal challenges, and provides a short- and medium-term outlook for the province.

The government remains committed to restraining spending, with total expenditures expected to be below the rate of inflation for the forecast period.

The government’s spending targets will be challenging to achieve. However, if they succeed, the province should meet its balance target with a small surplus in 2019–20.

Weaker-than-expected oil revenues could delay the elimination of the deficit. Alternatively, pent up demand stemming from the spending restraint could lead to challenges meeting expenditure targets.

Regardless of which year the budget balances, the province is on a more sustainable fiscal path going forward.
