The monthly Metropolitan Housing Starts publication provides the recent trends in housing starts for 27 metropolitan areas and expectations for starts over both the short and long term.

Document Highlights

  • Twenty-one of 27 CMAs have positive short-term expecations, up from 19 last month. All 6 areas with negative short-term expectations are located east of Manitoba.
  • Significantly fewer CMAs—12 out of 27—have positive long-term expectations.
  • The CMAs with the biggest year-over-year percentage increase in housing starts in May were Ottawa–Gatineau, Winnipeg, Trois-Rivières, Regina, and Calgary.
  • Victoria’s housing starts fell nearly 50 per cent in May compared with a year ago. Fortunately, expectations are positive in both the short and long term.
