The monthly Leading Indicator of Industry Profitability is constructed from high frequency data series. The indicators are designed to be predictive of movements in corporate profitability six months hence. An industry leading index is created for the economy as a whole, as well as for 49 individual sectors within the economy, thus providing coverage for most of the private business activity that takes place in Canada.

Document Highlights

After a disappointing finish to 2016, the trade sector is improving, with five of its eight industries seeing their indexes rise in February. An uptick in the Canadian dollar is easing the cost of imported merchandise and supporting the profitability outlook for retailers.

The profitability outlook for accommodations declined for the first time in nine months. A slowdown in U.S. visitors and less domestic spending is weighing on the index.
