The monthly Leading Indicator of Industry Profitability is constructed from high frequency data series. The indicators are designed to be predictive of movements in corporate profitability six months hence. An industry leading index is created for the economy as a whole, as well as for 49 individual sectors within the economy, thus providing coverage for most of the private business activity that takes place in Canada.

- The Conference Board of Canada’s Leading Indicator of Industry Profitability was flat in February, increasing by only 0.01 points. The index was supported by lower short-term interest rates and stability in the labour market, but the ongoing drop in commodity prices continued to pull the index back.
- For the first time since April 2014, more than half of the industries followed by the index declined. A declining profit outlook for the financial services and retail sectors, combined with the ongoing weakness in the commodity sector, helped to push 25 of the 49 industry indexes down.
