  • The Leading Indicator of Industry Profitability Index was unchanged in May. That broke a string of eight consecutive months of gains. And it suggests that the rate of profit growth is likely to slow later this year.
  • Of the 49 industries covered, 38 recorded an increase in their indexes this month. The broad-based gains still support a positive profit outlook. However, the economic recovery remains fragile due to renewed uncertainty about the financial health of the United States and Europe and the potential spillover effects in Canada.

The monthly Leading Indicator of Industry Profitability is constructed from high frequency data series. The indicators are designed to be predictive of movements in corporate profitability six months hence. An industry leading index is created for the economy as a whole, as well as for 49 individual sectors within the economy, thus providing coverage for most of the private business activity that takes place in Canada.
