After restrictions were implemented in January, the easing of February’s nationwide restrictions has been an important milestone in Canada’s economic recovery. However, supply chain disruptions caused by protests and sky-high prices at the pump are acting as a dampener.
Concerns over households’ future finances rose by 2.4 per cent this month. This increase in anxiety is likely due to higher inflation expectations and elevated fuel prices. The escalation suggests that consumers are worried that purchasing power could be further eroded over the year.
Driven by the reintroduction of restrictions, job growth lost steam in January, with the Canadian economy losing 200,000 jobs. Nevertheless, the share of confidence in future job prospects remained constant, with 22.8 per cent of Canadians being optimistic that job opportunities will return six months from now.
