The monthly Index of Consumer Confidence is constructed from responses to four attitudinal questions posed to a random sample of Canadian households. The latest results are based on over 2,000 telephone interviews conducted from July 29 to August 5, 2004.

Consumers remained upbeat in August, as the Consumer Confidence Index hung onto its July gain, edging down marginally to 121.3. Survey respondents were more bullish about big-ticket purchases but less so about the present and future state of family finances. The survey was conducted from August 12 to August 16.
