The quarterly Index of Consumer Attitudes is constructed from responses to four attitudinal questions posed to a random sample of Canadian households.

After two strong quarterly increases in consumer confidence, the Index slipped slightly to 123.7 in the third quarter, a decline of 4.6 points from the level recorded in June.
- When asked about the job situation, 73.8 per cent of respondents felt that it would be better or remain the same in the coming six month period – a drop of 3.1 per cent from the last survey but still a very high level.
- Ontario had the highest confidence rating among the provinces, registering an index level of 128.5.
- At 127.2, Atlantic and Quebec also recorded confidence levels above the national index.
- The small decline in confidence was broadly based across the country, with the Prairies recording the biggest decline, 6.6 index points, and British Columbia experiencing the smallest decrease, 1.1 index points.
