Document Highlights

In the second quarter, the Index reversed a 22.9 point, first quarter drop and increased by 14.2 index points to 131.6. While the rebound in business confidence is encouraging, only a year ago the Index was at 154.3. The current level indicates that firms are still fairly pessimistic about the present business environment.

  • The main reason for the increase was an improvement in respondents’ views concerning their financial position.
  • A likely reason for the increase in respondents’ perceptions about short-term economic conditions in Canada was the fact that the Canadian economy is growing faster than that of the United States.
  • Respondents are not concerned that higher energy prices will result in a surge in inflation.
