Brazil has tried to address its great income inequality, in part, through the education system. By improving the accessibility of higher education and emphasizing equality of opportunity, Brazil seeks to heighten fairness and meritocracy in its society. However, many Brazilian initiatives to improve access to higher education have given rise to unexpected results, some of which may even prove counterproductive.
The lessons of Brazil can help Canada’s higher education sector ensure that it is a force for equity and opportunity.
