The Help-Wanted Index dropped 8.5 points in April. It was only the second time in the past nine months that the index has fallen. The previous drop was in January. And once again, the index almost entirely wiped out the gains recorded over the two previous months. However, the gains in February and March were the highest since the index started to recover last August, and preceded April’s impressive job gains of 109,000 jobs.

The Conference Board of Canada’s Help-Wanted Index is an indicator of the number of new jobs advertised online. Our empirical analysis has shown that variations in the number of jobs posted online are generally followed by similar variations in employment in the ensuing months. Thus, the index can be used to predict near-term employment trends.
