The Help-Wanted Index decreased by 2 points to 88.4 in June, representing a second consecutive decline. Employment gains have been limited over the past year and recent movements in the national Help-Wanted Index suggest that employment will grow at a modest pace in the coming months, with an expected gain of 14,000 jobs in July.

The Conference Board of Canada’s Help-Wanted Index is an indicator of the number of new jobs advertised online. Our empirical analysis has shown that variations in the number of jobs posted online are generally followed by similar variations in employment in the ensuing months. Thus, the index can be used to predict near-term employment trends.
