This report, based on findings of a 2005 survey of Canadian organizations, describes how different organizations are adopting ERM. While many organizations do not have a formal ERM policy, they often operate within an ERM framework, and use consistent language, processes and practices. Most organizations have a risk management group that facilitates ERM, and over half have a chief risk officer or senior risk executive.

The report details the three stages of ERM: strategy development, strategy implementation and maintenance. It provides key benchmarking information on how organizations are developing their ERM approach and successfully integrating ERM while using the principles of risk management. The report demonstrates how ERM is being sustained and demonstrating results.

The report also identifies areas where organizations can continue enhancing their ERM efforts. Key recommendations include:

  • Linking ERM to strategy and reputation.
  • Measuring ERM against tangible results.
  • Adopting enterprise governance to balance ‘conformance and performance.’
