Document Highlights

Based on a survey of 294 organizations, this year’s Outlook summarizes the results of the Conference Board’s Annual Compensation Survey. It examines the pay increases that Canadian employees can expect in 2005.

This year’s report finds that the pay environment for 2005 will remain relatively stable. The majority of Canadian employees can expect a modest increase in real wages, with the average pay increase for non-unionized employees projected to be more than one percentage point ahead of the forecast inflation rate. Average increases for unionized employees are also expected to exceed inflation. Increases to compensation budgets are forecast to be similar to 2004, and employers are expected to continue differentiating rewards based on employee performance. As governments strive to balance their books, the average wage increase in the public sector is expected to be lower than in the private sector for the first time in four years.
