Compensation Planning Outlook 2002

The results of The Conference Board of Canada’s annual compensation survey are summarized in this 20th edition.

Canadian employees face smaller salary increases in 2002 due to weakness in the Canadian economy and uncertainty following the events of September 11.

The report shows there will be major sectoral and regional differences:

• the booming oil and gas sector will experience above average compensation increases of 5.3 per cent;
• transportation, mining and high technology will experience below average increases, if at all;
• Prairie provinces—fueled by high employment—are projecting average increases of 4.3 per cent; and
• the 3.7 per cent increases in Ontario are uncertain given the downturn in the high technology sector and the slide in manufacturing.
