Climate change is emerging as a hot issue on the agenda of investors and financial institutions—in particular, large institutions such as pension funds, asset management firms, banks and insurance companies that want to assess the carbon exposure and risk profiles of their investment, lending and insurance underwriting activities. Interest in this issue is expected to accelerate. Based on the Conference Board’s analysis of the Carbon Disclosure Project’s fourth annual information request responses, this report examines the state of disclosure of greenhouse gas emissions of 280 of Canada’s most valuable companies. It also describes the steps that respondent companies are taking to address climate change. It outlines recent climate-change developments in Canada and explores their implications for investors and corporations. A methodology is also presented to guide investors who want to determine a company’s net carbon risk.
