  • Canadian Economy—Canada’s economy expanded at a healthy pace in 2017, with a turnaround in private sector investment and strong consumer spending that is spurring electricity demand. However, the outlook for 2018 is more muted.
  • Shift to a Low-Carbon Economy—Canada has ratified the Paris Agreement, meaning carbon dioxide emissions have to decrease significantly through 2030. Much of Canada’s energy generation is already clean but regional differences create challenges to meeting emission targets.
  • Market Structure—In most provinces, public companies control all stages of the electricity supply chain. Alberta and Ontario have made significant efforts in deregulating their electricity markets but with no notable efficiency gains.
