This report examines the short-and medium-term economic and profitability outlook for Canada’s computer and electronic product manufacturing Industry.

Document Highlights

Household Spending—Given record levels of household debt and rising interest rates, household spending is expected to decelerate in the near term. The slowdown will result in weaker demand for all consumer-related products, including computers and electronics.

Labour Costs—Declining wages—particularly among workers in the natural and applied science occupations—have eased industry costs in recent years. This trend helped to spur the industry to profitability in 2017 for only the second time in the past five years.

Navigational Equipment—Regulations on drone usage are gradually becoming less stringent, which is helping to support their use in commercial applications. Drones rely on cutting-edge computer products, and their increased use will boost industry demand in coming years.
