This report examines the short-and medium-term economic and profitability outlook for Canada’s computer and electronic product manufacturing Industry.

Document Highlights

Canadian Dollar—The industry is enjoying a resurgence in growth, thanks largely to the depreciation of the currency. Moving forward, however, the transitory boost from a weaker loonie will start to wear off, and so will the industry’s growth.

Demand for Greener Buildings—The need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is driving demand for greener, more energy-efficient buildings, in turn supporting robust demand growth for smart building automation systems. These systems rely on computer and electronics manufacturers to provide the key instruments and devices that can regulate and control buildings’ lighting, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning.

Weakening Global Economy—Tightening monetary policy, higher trade costs due to trade tensions, and a slower-growing Chinese economy will reduce growth in demand for computer electronics in the coming months.
