  • Dollar—The Canadian dollar, which was running slightly ahead of the U.S. dollar in October, is expected to stay strong in the short term. This will put additional downward pressure on the effective price that Canadian producers receive for their wood product exports, directly reducing their profitability.
  • U.S. Housing—The U.S. housing market has slowed further, hard hit by the sub-prime loan market crunch.
  • Canadian Residential Construction—Canadian housing starts hit a 29-year high in September. Although residential construction is forecast to decline in the medium term, it is expected to remain strong by historical standards.
