  • The healthy domestic economy is translating into stronger real production growth, but it has also led to tightness in labour markets. For now, the costs associated with tight labour markets are outweighing the benefi ts of stronger growth.
  • In real terms, production, or sales, growth in the food services industry will improve but remain below average, at only 1.9 per cent per year between 2007 and 2011. The physical limit on how much food a person can eat will continue to constrain growth, but the food services industry is expected to continue capturing market share at the expense of retailers.
  • Rising labour costs led to a decline in industry profi ts in 2006. Competitive pressure will keep margins thin in the industry, but profi ts are expected to improve gradually, reaching $481 million by 2011.
