I've recently been in (perhaps slightly) heated discussions with colleagues, acquaintances, and friends about the overall costs of smoking to Canadians. I found trustworthy data to be relatively difficult to find and this report collates it all together in a nice little package.

Excellent work. Keep up the great research and reporting.

Strong report documenting the costs associated with tobacco use.  The report however neglects to consider the benefits (tangible and intangible) associated with tobacco use.  In the least, the report should take into account the jobs and tax revenue that the tobacco industry generates and compare these agains all the costs. Only then can we truly determine what the true cost is.

The section on short and long-term disability should motivate employers to address tobacco use as "tobacco use disorder" and incorporated as part of workplace health. Some stats on absenteeism/sick days taken related to tobacco-related illness would also be beneficial. These stats should grab employers' attention because of the costs involved, including staffing replacement costs.

This is a good report and comparison of the morbidity, mortality, and costs of tobacco use in Canada.

The cost estimates and tables are helpful, and the report has been arranged to easily access the information.
