This report presents an in-depth study of Kingston’s attractiveness to skilled workers and businesses in relation to eleven other Canadian cities. We benchmark 22 indicators that are critical to a city’s competitiveness. These indicators are grouped into three categories: economy, innovation, and society. A city that ranks highly in this benchmarking analysis will likely be more attractive to people and investment, ensuring it has a brighter future. Kingston ranks in the top half in all three categories, boding well for its outlook. Kingston ranks fourth out of 12 in the economy category, which measures economic well-being, economic growth, and competitiveness. The city comes in third in innovation—its best showing among the three categories—thanks to strong results in PhDs and knowledge employment. Kingston sits in sixth in the society category, which attempts to gauge a city’s quality of life. The following cities are benchmarked: Halifax, Sherbrooke, Kingston, Peterborough, Burlington, Hamilton, Waterloo, Guelph, London, Windsor, Saskatoon, Victoria About Alan Alan Arcand oversees the Centre’s forecasts of 28 Canadian census metropolitan areas. As well, he conducts customized studies measuring the fiscal capacity of cities, economic impact analyses, and the development of customized macroeconomic models. Alan obtained his M.A. in economics from Queen’s University and his B.A. in international relations from the University of Windsor. He has been with the Conference Board since 2000.
