This briefing presents the findings of a survey conducted with 620 individuals in Canada using the Occupational Stress Injury Resiliency (OSIR) Index screening tool for first responders and front-line workers.

In 2020, 620 individuals in Canada completed the Occupational Stress Injury Resiliency (OSIR) Index screening tool. Developed by Public Services Health and Safety Association (PSHSA) in partnership with The Conference Board of Canada, this is a non-diagnostic screening tool for assessing occupational stress injury risks among first responders and front-line health care workers in Canada. The tool predicted important outcomes for mental health, physical health, and the workplace. For example, first responders who reported higher OSIR Index scores had lower presenteeism and absenteeism (due to illness) levels than those with lower scores. We found correlations between the OSIR Index score and workplace outcomes such as motivation, short-term disability time off, and workers’ compensation claims. Our research also identified employer supports, employer perceptions, and employee behaviour factors across OSIR sub-scales as important for prevention. There is significant evidence that the OSIR Index is a reliable, useful screening tool for occupational stress injury risk.
