The monthly Metropolitan housing starts publication provides the recent trends in housing starts for 29 metropolitan areas and expectations for starts over both the short and long term.

Document Highlights

There are six census metropolitan areas (CMAs) with both positive short- and long-term expectations, half as many as last month.

Most CMAs have negative long-term expectations.

The CMAs with the biggest year-over-year increases in housing starts in December were Kitchener–Waterloo, Calgary, Sherbrooke, Oshawa, and Windsor.

Saint John had the biggest year-over-year decrease in housing starts last month.
