The low numeracy and literacy scores are concerning as well as the poor matching of skills to employment outcomes. It appears more attention is needed to reinforce the basic skills versus credential attainment. Employers will see a growing skills gap if this continues in the country, particularly as automation becomes ingrained in all aspects of work. |

Mary, How immigration is the cause of low literacy and numeracy skills in Canada when most of the immigrants that come to Canada ( around 300,000 per year) are educated and has to pass English classes before being able to qualify for PR. Only refugees( 10,000 per year on average), that are a fraction of the newcomers to Canada are exempt from these requirements of the point system. Most of the immigrants come from countries where numeracy classes are more complex and rigorous like China, Eastern Europe, Latin America in comparison with the Canadian system. |

Good analysis. Agree that the big factor in the low literacy and numeracy skills in Canada is due to Canada's continued high immigration rate from non English speaking countries. This doesn't correct for a long time, if ever. |
