Canada is regarded as one of the safest countries in the world. However, a year ago, Canada was rocked by two terrorist attacks over three days. Although the number of casualties could have been much higher, the murder of two military officers, and the storming of Parliament Hill shocked a nation that perhaps was a little too secure in the thought that terrorism was a scourge that only happened “over there”. As the country recovered, questions began to be asked. Who were the perpetrators? Why had they done this? What does it mean? And will it happen again?
Join us for a frank discussion on these issues with former CSIS strategic analyst Phil Gurski. In his new book, “The Threat from Within: Recognizing Al Qaeda-Inspired Radicalization and Terrorism in the West”, Phil looks at the drivers and influences leading to violent extremism. Phil will discuss these incidents on Canada’s soil, as well as present his latest research findings on how we may be able to recognize radicalization before it’s too late.
