In 2014, The Conference Board of Canada’s Centre for Business Innovation (CBI) conducted a national telephone survey of Canadian businesses to ascertain Canadian business peoples’ attitudes and behaviours that affect national innovation performance. The CBI is producing a series of briefings that highlight key survey themes. This briefing, the second in the series, focuses on innovation management. Using the framework developed in a previous CBI report (Innovation Management for Established Businesses: Management Matters), this briefing organizes the survey data on the managerial attitudes and behaviours of Canadian businesses. We also relate the survey findings to previous survey work (the CBI’s Survey on Innovation Metrics and Management, 2012) and to work on financing innovation. Topics discussed include the most important factors in determining Canada’s commercial innovation performance, the relationship between management and innovation performance, and the barriers to innovation, according to Canadian businesses.
