Travel Markets Outlook, Metropolitan Focus offers an in-depth analysis and forecast for the tourism industry in Canada and nine major metropolitan areas. The companion publication, National Focus, analyzes and provides a forecast for provincial tourism, with a special focus on five key international travel markets.

Document Highlights

  • This report analyzes and provides a forecast for the tourism industry in Canada and nine metropolitan areas—Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa–Gatineau, Montréal, Québec City, and Halifax—for the period from 2012 to 2016.
  • It looks separately at domestic, U.S., and overseas travellers for each city, and also provides separate statistics for business and leisure travellers.
  • Overall, global economic concerns are expected to weaken tourism in the near term. However, Western Canadians and visitors from several emerging economies are expected to bolster tourism numbers in some cities.
  • The authors are cautiously optimistic about long-term prospects for most cities, particularly those that have recently upgraded their tourism infrastructure or that will host major events in the next few years.
